What is alpha methylstyrene?

Alpha methylstyrene (AMS) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C9H10. It is a colorless liquid with a slightly sweet smell. AMS is used as a solvent in the production of synthetic resins, polymers, and plastics. It is also used as a precursor to produce phenol, acetophenone, and other chemicals. AMS has low solubility in water but is soluble in many organic solvents such as benzene and ethyl acetate. It can be produced by the dehydrogenation of cumene or isopropylbenzene using a process called alpha-methylstyrene technology. AMS has also been identified as an environmental pollutant due to its toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation.
